It's very simple, mixing is the 95% of making a track sound good and mastering is the 5% left.
The Mixing stage is where you make all the sounds have sense together (with EQ, compression, reverb, etc.) and the mastering stage is where you make sure that everything is ready to be listened (Eq, compression, saturation and limiting)
